Designing a cow for pasture-based milk production systems
03 - 25th May, 2022

Designing a cow for pasture-based milk production systems: Insights into the breeding objectives, the important traits, productivity and profitability of a cow under seasonal pasture-based milk production systems and model to calculate the economic value of breeding objective traits.
By: Prof. Nicolas Lopez-Villalobos
Professor of Dairy Cattle Breeding and Genetics, School of Agriculture and Environment, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

The course was held in May 2022 (8 hours on zoom), the activity has been funded by the University of Padova in the framework of the call "Shaping a World-class University", Second Edition (https://www.unipd.it/en/shaping-world-class-university) and co-funded by the PhD Course in Animal and Food Science.

The Course provided the participating students of the Master in Animal Science and Technology and the PhD Course in Animal and Food Science of the University of Padova with knowledge about milk production from pasture; the main features of a cow to be efficient in a pastured-based system; information on how genetic selection can contribute to improving traits of economic; importance for the farmer in grazing systems; soft and transversal skills as for group reporting.

Let’s seed future exchange of students and teachers with the School of Agriculture and Environment, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand!
